THE DEVELOPMENT UCL is ‘London’s global university’ and is undergoing a £1.2 billion transformation project. As part of the works a 5 year temporary teaching pop up has been installed in the Main Quad to provide three lecture rooms for up to three hundred students.
THE BRIEF The Main Quad is located in the central hub of the Bloomsbury campus surrounded by historic buildings at a Grade I listed site. Embrace were appointed to wrap the modular cabins using a sympathetic design to enhance the environment and pay homage to the rich history of the site and the university.
THE SOLUTION As part of the planning approval process it was ensured that the ‘art wrap’ design by UCL Professor Edward Allington and Jo Volley (Senior Lecturer at the UCL Slade School of Fine Art) was historically sympathetic. Embrace digitally printed the artwork for the modular cabin wrap to cover the two-storey modular temporary teaching facility using a vinyl mesh wrap.
The wrap was installed using an extended offset banner frame which was accompanied by a lighting rig. The installation covers all four sides of the cabins with a striking creative design plotting the growth of University College London from 1826 to 1926. Measuring 450 m2 in total (4 m x 15 m x 7.5 m) the banner does a brilliant job of masking the modular cabin structure in the delightful Main Quad in front of the Octagon Building.
The lighting rig also provides 60 linear metres of down lighting which can be programmed to offer different colours and effects that enhance the mesh PVC banner installation at night. Embrace worked closely with UCL Estates, architects Burwell Deakins and modular cabin provider Ashby & Croft to deliver an outstanding result, all to the agreed schedule and budget.
