Transforming Bishop’s Palace House with Mat Collishaw’s art

Bishop’s Palace House in Kingston is once again gaining attention, not just for its historical significance, but for its innovative transformation into an outdoor gallery, showcasing the captivating “The Impenetrable Words” artworks of renowned artist Mat Collishaw. With the help of Embrace Building Wraps, two striking printed wraps now adorn the façade, inviting residents and visitors alike to engage with art in an unconventional setting.

The installation includes two large printed wraps, measuring an impressive 26m x 5m and 25.5m x 4.4m, extending across the building’s exterior and captivating the attention of those crossing Kingston Bridge. The artistic display at Bishop’s Palace House also features 20 individual artworks that mesmerize passersby, effectively turning the building into a vibrant exhibition space.

“This project underscores our commitment not only to beautification but also to sustainability and community engagement,” said Greg Forster, CEO and founder of Embrace Building Wraps. “By transforming ordinary spaces into extraordinary canvases, we create opportunities for public enjoyment and appreciation of art while keeping our environmental responsibilities in mind.”

The Bishop’s Palace House, which was previously a 1970s brown brick car park and shopping centre, has been reimagined thanks to the efforts of Canadian and Portland Estates. The site is now part of the Riverside Walk, which features high-profile riverside restaurants and leisure activities, attracting both locals and tourists. This revitalization aligns with the ongoing preservation efforts in Kingston’s Old Town Conservation Area, where each development reflects the historical legacy of this charming riverside community.

The printed wraps by Embrace Building Wraps are not just visually striking; they are also enhanced with front illumination, ensuring that the dynamic colours and designs are eye-catching day and night. The art will engage pedestrians and traffic alike, creating an inviting atmosphere that transforms Bishop’s Palace House into a living canvas, celebrating Kingston’s rich cultural tapestry.

This venture reflects Embrace’s dedication to delivering sustainable solutions, as the company has pledged to plant 242 new trees as part of their global initiative, bringing the number of trees funded by the company worldwide to over 17,000. The act of combining art with responsible environmental practices highlights Embrace’s commitment to innovative building wraps that positively impact urban landscapes.

The Bishop’s Palace House project stands as a testament to the synergy of creativity and architecture, as Embrace Building Wraps continues to celebrate the role of public art in rejuvenating communities. As Kingston embraces its newfound identity as an outdoor gallery, the collaboration with Mat Collishaw and sustainable efforts by Embrace show how art can unite and inspire those who encounter it.
