Bishop’s Palace House, Kingston

THE DEVELOPMENT

Bishop’s Palace House, situated on the banks of the River Thames next to Kingston’s Grade II-listed bridge, is a prominent historical site that recently underwent a significant transformation. Originally built in the 1970s as a brown brick car park and shopping centre, the site was revitalized as part of an exciting development led by Canadian and Portland Estates. The Riverside Walk features an array of high-profile riverfront restaurants and leisure spaces, creating a sought-after destination for both residents and visitors.

THE BRIEF

Canadian and Portland Estates approached Embrace Building Wraps with a clear vision: to transform the façade of Bishop’s Palace House into an engaging canvas for contemporary art, featuring the renowned works of Mat Collishaw. The objective was to create two large, impactful printed wraps that would not only attract attention from pedestrians on Kingston Bridge but also enhance the overall aesthetic of the Riverside Walk. The wraps needed to be durable, visually striking, and environmentally responsible, aligning with the client’s goals for sustainability and community engagement. Across the building’s windows, 20 individual artworks would also captivate passersby.

THE SOLUTION

Embrace Building Wraps delivered an innovative solution by installing two premium printed wraps measuring 26m x 5m and 25.5m x 4.4m. Utilizing bespoke offset frames, the wraps were designed to withstand the elements while delivering a stunning visual experience. The wraps feature front illumination, ensuring that the artworks come to life both during the day and at night, creating a vibrant spectacle for those passing by.

Beyond the visual impact, Embrace committed to sustainability throughout the project. In partnership with Canadian and Portland Estates, the company funded the planting of 242 new trees, contributing to an expanding global forest initiative. This dedication to environmental responsibility not only enhances the local community but also aligns with Embrace’s core values of supporting sustainable practices in all installations.

The Bishop’s Palace House project was completed on time and within budget, showcasing Embrace’s commitment to high standards and exceptional service. By transforming the historical site into an outdoor gallery for “The Impenetrable Words”, Embrace Building Wraps has played a pivotal role in revitalizing Kingston, enhancing its cultural landscape while ensuring that environmental considerations remain at the forefront of urban development.

The successful installation serves as a prime example of how building wraps can merge artistry with architectural integrity, breathing new life into underutilized spaces and enriching public life. As Bishop’s Palace House continues to attract attention as an artistic hub, it reinforces the importance of innovative building solutions that celebrate and promote community engagement.
