One Sloane Gardens
THE DEVELOPMENT One Sloane Gardens is a red brick 19th century mansion house that was designed by Edwin Thomas Hall (who also famously designed the Liberty London department store). The property currently comprises individual apartments (‘The Mansions Sloane Gardens’) and is located in the Sloane Square Conservation Area within the borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The building – part of the Cadogan Estate – is being converted into a luxury boutique hotel with thirty rooms and will include a bar, ground floor coffee house and fine-dining restaurant on an additional rooftop storey. The project is the largest being undertaken by Cadogan at Sloane Gardens.
THE BRIEFAs part of the renovations the external façade is being retained and sensitively restored, whilst the structure behind is demolished and interiors reconstructed. ReardonSmith Architects designed a façade retention scheme and Embrace were called in to disguise the metal system using a building wrap that would display an authentic representation of the Edwardian building.
THE SOLUTION Embrace Building Wraps were on hand to cover the steel façade retention system, scaffolding and site cabins on a gantry. Working with The McLaren Construction Group on site and using artwork designed by Hotel Costes Projects in Paris we were able to deliver a stunning oversized tromp l’oeil effect for the client. The mesh PVC banner is approximately 2,054 m2 across two elevations and also covers cabins, a HAKI stair tower and further works to the rear of the property. The project was particularly complex as the property is curved, with numerous archways, soffits and challenging corner joints. Voids for site monitoring points were also to be added in situ.
As ever, nothing fazed us as we are the ‘go-to’ organisation to deliver high end, premium projects in key locations irrespective of the complexity or scale! We installed the project on time and within budget. In turn the development was hidden away behind the banner which enhances the area and improves the urban environment for the local residents and all visitors to this high profile location.
