5-7 Carnaby Street
THE DEVELOPMENT 5-7 Carnaby Street, located in the heart of the shopping mecca in London, is being redeveloped with the refurbishment of office floors, the property frontage and shared areas. A Timberland store located on the ground level would continue to trade throughout the programme.
THE BRIEF Our scope of works for Shaftesbury was to wrap the scaffolding where operationally possible, disguising most of the unsightly works. The scaffold is an unusual shape with two supporting towers and the working lifts at a much higher level.
Due to the nature of the works and the non-standard scaffold installation we were presented with one of the more complex scaffolding wrap challenges. In order to avoid disrupting the works we were required to provide clear access behind the scaffold wrap for working lift access. Additionally, the ladder beams were to be left intact.
THE SOLUTION The wrap has been installed on a bespoke offset frame which neatly creates an arch and focal point for Timberland. The front right-hand side of the scaffold was left open to allow materials to be lifted up into the building.
At the top level a row of protruding scaffold poles that support a working platform break up the wrap, so we installed a face-fixed printed wrap as an infill. We were also able to maintain eyebolts through the wrap in readiness for the future installation of the Christmas lights.
Whilst any void space is never preferred, given the unique operational set up at this location our client was delighted with the amount of wrap coverage we were still able to provide.
We have extensive experience working in busy shopping districts, having successfully completed earlier projects in Carnaby Street, Oxford Street and all around the West End. As such we completed most of the installation in the early hours of the morning, way ahead of the start of each day’s trading.
The final installation has quite literally camouflaged the works, transforming ugly scaffolding into a stylish frame that elevates the property and raises its visibility rather than detracting from it. All delivered the Embrace way – on time and to budget.
